The basics
The City of Allen requires a fence permit for any new fence over 30 inches tall. This includes like-for-like replacement of an existing fence — Allen is one of the stricter cities for permit enforcement in our service area. Code inspectors actively patrol construction sites and have issued stop-work orders on un-permitted installs.
What it costs
Allen's residential fence permit fee is typically $45–$65. Pool barriers and corner lots may run higher due to additional review. Verify current rates on the City of Allen permits page.
Application requirements
- Site plan with property lines, easements, and proposed fence location
- Materials and height specification
- Gate locations and widths
- Contractor license verification
- HOA approval letter (most Allen subdivisions require one)
Timeline
Standard residential: 5 business days. Pool barriers: 7–10 days. Allen's permit office runs on a tight, predictable schedule — applications submitted Monday morning are usually issued Friday of the same week.
HOA approval in Allen subdivisions:
- Twin Creeks: 1–2 weeks. ARC meets weekly. Cedar required, dark-stain palette.
- Watters Creek: 2–3 weeks. ARC meets twice monthly.
- Star Creek: 1–2 weeks. Standard cedar or composite. Picket gates approved.
- Bethany Lakes: 2 weeks. Cedar board-on-board preferred.
Allen height and zoning rules
- Front yard: 4 ft maximum, picket or open-style only
- Back and side yard: 8 ft maximum
- Corner lots: Standard side-yard rules apply 15 ft from right-of-way
- Pool barriers: 48 inches minimum, self-closing self-latching gate, picket spacing under 4 inches
- Easements: Fence cannot block utility easement access; drawing must show
Inspection
Allen inspectors check at frame stage (posts in concrete, rails attached, pickets not yet installed). They verify:
- Post depth matches permit (we install 30 inches for 6-ft, 36 inches for 8-ft)
- Concrete in every post hole
- Posts plumb
- Setback from property lines and easements as drawn
- Gate framing and hardware (custom-built cedar gate, three hinges)
Allen inspectors are fast and consistent — we typically pass first time on a clean install.
What we handle
- Site plan drawing
- Permit application submission and fee payment
- HOA architectural review packet
- Inspection scheduling and on-site meeting
- Re-inspect if corrections needed
- Final permit close-out paperwork
Most of our Allen clients never speak to the city directly. They sign the estimate, we handle everything else.
