Josh's story
Josh Stoneking took the business over from his brother-in-law and renamed it Woodchuck Millwork in 2016. What he saw in the North Dallas market was a gap: homeowners wanted honest, good craftsmanship at a fair price, and most of what was being sold to them was neither. Closing that gap became his passion the day he took over, and it's still how the shop runs.
Woodchuck grew as a fence-and-deck operation in Allen because that's where the demand was: every new homeowner in Twin Creeks and Watters Creek needed a privacy fence, and most of the franchises building them were cutting corners. Josh built a reputation on the cedar grade he chose, the steel posts he insisted on, and estimates that said exactly what the job would cost. The custom-woodwork side of the business grew naturally — clients who liked the deck asked about the kitchen island, asked about the mantel, asked about the built-ins.
Today Woodchuck Millwork is a single-crew operation working out of a shop on Rush Creek Drive. Josh personally supervises every install. Ken handles project management, scheduling, and the materials calls. The crew is small on purpose — we can't take every job that comes in, and we don't try to.
What we believe
- The right material costs more for a reason. #1 grade cedar is what we use on our own properties — that's what we install on yours. We don't push #2 grade or "cedar-tone" pressure-treated lookalikes.
- Post depth is non-negotiable. 13-gauge heavy-duty steel posts, 30 inches deep for a 6-foot fence, 36 inches for an 8-foot. Bagged concrete on every post. Shortcuts in the ground lead to a leaning fence in 4 years.
- Permits are our job, not yours. Most residential fence replacements in our cities don't require one, so we rarely need to pull a permit — but when a job does call for it, we pull it, submit the site plan, schedule the inspection, and meet the inspector. You never have to deal with the city.
- Owner-supervised, every day. The hands that quote the job are the hands that build the job. We don't rotate crews and we don't disappear after the deposit clears. On larger jobs and in the busy seasons we do bring in subcontractors — but every subcontractor works directly with Josh for a minimum of four completed projects before they run a job on their own, and even after that, Josh or a project manager checks in daily on every job site.
- Honest tradeoffs. Trex doesn't warp but it gets hot. Cedar is beautiful but it needs staining. White wood pine is cheaper but it doesn't last. We tell you what we'd choose and why — and we tell you when the answer depends on you.
